Honours and Awards

Swansea Bay Regional Equality Council would like to express their congratulations and jubilations felt by all those associated with the organisation for high Honours that have been bestowed on their Chief Executive, Mr Taha Idris.

June 2010 was a good month for Mr Idris. He was appointed a Magistrate by the Lord Chancellor.  Mr Idris had already served on the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee for West Glamorgan. The Advisory Committee looks after the appointment and discipline of Magistrates. He ended 9 years on the Committee in 2009. He has now gone on to be a Magistrate himself which is an honourable duty for him to perform.

The same month saw the First Minister of Welsh Assembly Government bestowing on Mr Idris the Welsh Honour of “Recognising Achievement for Services to Wales”.  This was in recognition of Mr Idris’ contributions to creating a fairer and just society based on people‘s contributions to the civic society. The ultimate Honours came only a few days after the Welsh Assembly accolade.

Her Majesty the Queen saw fit to make Mr Idris an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Said Mr Idris, after receiving the title. “I feel humbled and I am grateful to the people and organisations who must have thought well of me to have nominated me for this great accolade”.

Mr Idris went on to add, “this honour is in recognition of the people that I have worked for over the years and I would be selfish to claim it for myself alone”. Her Majesty took into account Mr Idris’ 25 years+ work with voluntary sector organisations from Wales across to Lancashire.  This has included his work for a wide range of groups such as BBC Children in Need, regional equality councils, councils for voluntary services, community health councils and many more.

The Chair of SBREC, Councillor Nick Tregoning expressed his delight at such an honour having been bestowed to Mr Idris.

“I always knew Taha should have been awarded an honours for all the dedication that he has shown towards helping people in need and there could not have been a more deserving person for this than Taha.
